In the face of the new economic and environmental realities, design is playing an increasingly important role in an emerging global community. Experience no longer trumps ideas-success is now being fueled by intergenerational, interdisciplinary concepts and communication. 2011 STATE OF DESIGN features a revelatory conversation between two design pioneers of different generations who connect on the issues at hand, moderated by Metropolis Editor in Chief Susan S. Szenasy:
IDEO CEO & President Tim Brown, author of Change by Design: How Design Thinking Transforms Organizations and Inspires Innovation, is known for exploring the very core of the industry. Fresh from the World Economic Forum and TED conference,** he will convey his latest thoughts about how "design thinking" fuels business worldwide. Brown will receive the first annual Havemeyer Award at the March 22 event.***
2011 Metropolis Game Changer and MASS Design Group Cofounder Michael Murphy will talk about how local work can create transformational change with global implications. His firm's pro-bono Butaro hospital in Rwanda contributes to the well-being of 400,000 locals.
